Ontophronology

The study of constructed being: how human beings create self, meaning, reality and response through awareness.

Ontophronological Compass
The Ontophronological Compass: a symbolic map of Dynamic Intelligence in motion.
Ontophronology is the study of being aware of how we think about being.

What is Ontophronology?

Ontophronology is the study of how human beings construct their experience of self, meaning, reality and response. It is not concerned with reality as an object sitting outside the observer. It is concerned with the process through which reality becomes meaningful to the observer.

The word combines three roots: Onto, meaning being, existence or reality; Phron, from practical wisdom, judgement and understanding; and Ology, the study of. Together, they describe a new field of inquiry into the conscious construction of being.

At its simplest, Ontophronology asks one central question:

How do we know what we know about being?

Why a New Discipline?

Existing disciplines each illuminate part of the human condition, but none fully describe the real-time construction of the self as it experiences, interprets and responds to the world.

DisciplinePrimary FocusOntophronological Limitation
PsychologyMind, behaviour and mental processes.Often studies the product of construction rather than construction itself.
PhilosophyKnowledge, truth, reality and existence.Often abstracts being away from the living, constructing observer.
Adult DevelopmentMeaning-making and developmental complexity.Often describes stages or structures without fully mapping moment-by-moment construction.
CoachingChange, growth and improved functioning.Often seeks transformation without a precise account of how self is constructed in context.
OntophronologyThe construction of being, meaning, self and response. Its focus is the active process of construction itself.

Ontophronology therefore sits above and between psychology, philosophy, adult development and coaching. It does not replace them. It gives them a higher-order frame.

The Foundational Proposition

Every experience of reality is mediated through construction. Identity, belief, values, emotions, personality, leadership, culture and meaning are not fixed entities waiting to be discovered. They are ongoing constructions emerging through the interaction of awareness, interpretation and response.

This means the observer is not separate from reality. The observer participates in reality by constructing the meaning of what is observed.

Self is Constructed

The self is not a fixed object but a moment-by-moment construction shaped by attention, memory, intention, context and awareness.

Meaning is Constructed

Meaning does not arrive fully formed. It is generated through the interaction between the observer and the context being interpreted.

Response is Constructed

Behaviour is not merely reaction. At higher levels of awareness, response becomes a conscious act of construction.

The Observer Problem

Every description of reality is produced by an observer. Every observer perceives through limitations. Every limitation influences what can be known, said, measured and acted upon.

Ontophronology does not try to eliminate subjectivity. Instead, it studies the processes through which subjectivity is created. The question is not merely whether an idea is true, but how the thinker came to experience it as true.

This makes Ontophronology an explicitly reflexive discipline. It turns the act of knowing back upon the knower.

The Ontophronological Compass

The Ontophronological Compass is a symbolic model representing the dynamic construction of experience. At its centre lies awareness. Around awareness are eight directions through which the observer constructs, interprets and enacts reality.

1. North — Intention

The origin of directed construction. What am I trying to do, become, protect, avoid or create?

2. Northeast — Habitual Thinking

The unconscious Cognitive Intentions and Thinking Styles that pre-shape perception before awareness intervenes.

3. East — Awareness

Metacognition in action. Am I aware of how I am constructing this moment?

4. Southeast — Choice

The point of deliberate redirection, where construction can move beyond habit.

5. South — Response

The observable output of Dynamic Intelligence. How aligned is my response with my intention?

6. Southwest — Emotional Construction

The felt meaning created while navigating thought, context and relationship.

7. West — Environment and Context

The constructed meaning of surroundings. Context is not merely external; it is interpreted into existence.

8. Northwest — Self-as-Other

The capacity to observe oneself from outside oneself, enabling perspective-taking and identity fluidity.

The compass is not a map of reality. It is a map of how reality becomes reality for the observer.

Constructed Development Theory as Applied Ontophronology

Constructed Development Theory provides one practical framework within Ontophronology. CDT examines how individuals construct themselves in context through Cognitive Intentions, Thinking Styles, Dynamic Intelligence and the Awareness Quotient.

From this perspective, development is not the accumulation of knowledge. Development is the increasing awareness of the processes by which knowledge, identity, meaning and behaviour are constructed.

Cognitive Intentions

The building blocks of construction: unconscious cognitive heuristics that shape how experience is filtered, organised and enacted.

Dynamic Intelligence

The process of constructing awareness in the moment, from Intention through Awareness and Choice to Response.

Awareness Quotient

A measure of the degree to which a person is aware of their construction of self, context and response.

The Ontophronologist

An Ontophronologist studies the construction of being. The role is not to tell people what reality is, but to help reveal how reality is being constructed by the observer.

The Ontophronologist therefore works at the intersection of inquiry, awareness, development and deliberate construction.

  • Constructed Identity
  • Constructed Meaning
  • Constructed Belief
  • Constructed Culture
  • Constructed Leadership
  • Constructed Learning
  • Constructed Spirituality
  • Constructed Selfhood
  • Constructed Emotion
  • Constructed Response

The aim is not to determine what is true. The aim is to understand how human beings come to experience something as true.

Towards Construction-Aware Living

The highest aim of Ontophronology is the development of awareness itself. As awareness increases, the individual becomes increasingly capable of recognising that beliefs, identities, values, interpretations and behaviours are constructions rather than absolutes.

This does not remove meaning. It reveals the process by which meaning is created.

At lower levels of awareness, we live inside our constructions. At higher levels of awareness, we begin to see our constructions. At the highest levels, we can choose them deliberately.

Ontophronology is not the study of what is true. It is the study of how humans construct truth, meaning, selfhood and reality.

Why It Matters

Human conflict often begins when constructed realities are mistaken for absolute realities. People defend identities, beliefs, values and cultures as though they are fixed truths, when they are often inherited, habituated or unconsciously maintained constructions.

Ontophronology offers a way to study these constructions without reducing them to pathology, preference or personality. It asks a more developmental question: what level of awareness is available to the observer in the moment of construction?

This has implications for coaching, leadership, education, politics, therapy, belief, culture and adult development. Wherever humans construct meaning, Ontophronology applies.

A Closing Definition

Ontophronology is the philosophical and developmental study of constructed being. It explores how human beings construct themselves, their worlds and their responses through the interaction of intention, awareness, choice and response.

It is not simply a theory of cognition. It is the study of how human beings construct reality and themselves within it.
