Vertical Interoception
From Somatic Feeling to Constructed Meaning

Vertical Interoception is the developmental bridge between raw bodily sensation and constructed self-awareness. It transforms moment-to-moment somatic experiences into predictive and meaningful data, supporting deliberate identity construction in the present. This model integrates CDT’s I-A-C-R loop with Awareness Quotient (AQ) levels from AQ5 to AQ9.

Developmental Awareness Ladder

LevelOrientationCDT PillarDescriptionAQ
Somatic awareness After action Response Notice/label bodily state post‑event; regulate and reflect. AQ5
Reflective awareness During action Awareness Observe self in real time; track reaction as it unfolds. AQ6
Constructed awareness Before action Intention → Awareness → Choice Model triggers; pre‑select response‑sets; shape identity before action. AQ7
Vertical interoception Across time Full I–A–C–R loop Construct meaning from body’s signals in real time; use sensation as developmental feedback. AQ8AQ9

Practice Prompt · Vertical Interoception

  1. Identify a context: What situation is arising soon?
  2. Sensory awareness: Where is tension, heat, or sensation most present in the body?
  3. Construct meaning: What is this sensation trying to prepare me for?
  4. Apply CDT: What is my Intention in this moment? What Choice is available?
  5. Forecast a response: How might I reframe the next signal as feedback instead of failure?
  6. Recalibrate after: After the moment, what would I construct differently next time?
“Somatic data is the thermometer. Construction is the thermostat. Vertical Interoception is learning how to choose your own temperature.”
