Real-Time Modelling in CDT
A New Way
Definition
From numerous conversations with our colleague, Geoff, where he coined the term: Real-Time Modelling, to describe his coaching process with clients, it became apparent that the principles of Next Level Coaching are all about how we model the client in the moment.
Therefore, Real-Time Modelling is the live, deliberate construction of another person’s internal processing using Dynamic Intelligence (DI), informed by moment-to-moment awareness of Cognitive Intentions (CIs), to mirror, simulate, and evolve their thinking as it unfolds.
Core Components
| CDT Principle | Real-Time Modelling Expression |
|---|---|
| Dynamic Intelligence (DI) | The engine of real-time modelling. The coach uses DI to navigate from Intention → Awareness → Choice → Response, while simultaneously mapping the client’s trajectory through the same. |
| Cognitive Intentions (CIs) | The raw material. Coaches detect which CIs the client is using (or avoiding), and respond with calibrated CI contrasts, interventions, or expansions. |
| Awareness Quotient (AQ) | Determines how deeply the coach can model. A coach at AQ4 may mirror behaviourally; a coach at AQ8 will construct and reframe epistemologically. |
| Thinking Style | The coach holds a mental map of the client’s Thinking Style and flexibly reconstructs it in response to shifts, blocks, and insights. |
| Meta-Awareness Loop | The coach models the client modelling themselves. A recursive awareness system is formed, increasing the client’s AQ in real-time. |
Real-Time Modelling Across AQ Levels
| AQ Level | What Real-Time Modelling Looks Like |
|---|---|
| AQ4 | Coach mirrors observable behaviour, uses intuition to guess what’s behind it. |
| AQ5 | Coach begins recognising CIs and patterns, nudges client to notice discrepancies. |
| AQ6 | Coach explicitly reflects back CI usage and reveals unconscious patterns. |
| AQ7 | Coach co-constructs new mental models live with client, offering reframing choices. |
| AQ8 | Coach lives in deliberate disequilibrium, constantly reshaping mutual models. |
| AQ9 | Coach models not just what is, but what could be, holding multiple possible client constructions simultaneously and letting the most appropriate emerge contextually. |
Metaphor
The Coach as a Cognitive Chameleon:
Real-Time Modelling is like a chameleon that not only changes colour to match its environment, but also rearranges the pattern of the environment as it adapts. It’s not mimicry: it’s constructive mirroring with intent.
Why It Surpasses NLP Modelling
NLP modelling focuses on replicating excellence, typically post-hoc. CDT’s Real-Time Modelling focuses on reconstructing cognition live, even when the client themselves isn’t aware of their process. It:
- Moves from replication → transformation
- Is meta-contextual, not situational
- Uses construct awareness not behavioural cues
- Is informed by AQ levels and complexity calibration, not rapport alone
Practical Example
During a session, the client defaults to “Own” + “Internal” + “Information” to process conflict.
At AQ6, the coach notices this pattern and lightly contrasts it by shifting to “Partner” + “External” + “Relationship” in their language.
The client feels the shift and models the shift in return—without needing it to be explained.
This reciprocal modelling loop is what distinguishes Real-Time Modelling from mere reflective listening.
Framing Summary
“Real-Time Modelling is the conscious act of constructing the other person’s Thinking Style live, within context, for the purpose of facilitating higher-order awareness and deliberate choice-making—by deliberately shifting one’s own construction in real time.”
It’s not about guiding the client to awareness. It’s being awareness on their behalf until they can inhabit it themselves.
Testimonial
That is a powerful yet demanding coaching approach that requires the coach to manage simultaneous layers of awareness—of the client, of themselves, and of the unfolding dynamic. Without external supervision, the coach must take on an additional level of internal quality control, which itself demands a high degree of developmental maturity and ethical self-reflection.

Next Level Coaching + Real-time Modelling Process Flow
This is a combined process flow for Next Level Coaching and Real-time Modelling, with the clear overlaps. Structured as a practical session blueprint for teaching coaches while preserving CDT’s depth.
Phase 1 – Setting the Developmental Frame (Next Level Coaching)
Purpose: Establish the meta-context so the session is understood as a thinking upgrade, not just problem-solving.
- Agree the Developmental Intention – Clarify the aim is vertical growth, not just solving the immediate issue. Use AQ language if appropriate.
- Surface Client’s Default Construction – Ask questions to reveal how they frame the problem and identify early Cognitive Intentions (CIs).
Phase 2 – Live Awareness Mapping (Real-time Modelling)
Purpose: Hold up a mirror to the structure of the client’s thinking.
- Spot & Name CI Use in Real Time – e.g., “You just shifted from Internal to External perspective there — did you notice?”
- Reflect the Intention–Awareness–Choice–Response Loop – Explain how intention, awareness, choice, and response are linked.
- Draw Their Thinking Map – Sketch CI interplay to show their thinking style as a system.
Phase 3 – Disequilibrium & Stretch (NLC meets RTM)
Purpose: Disrupt the autopilot and expand thinking capacity.
- Introduce a CI Shift Experiment – Swap a dominant CI for its opposite or a less-used one.
- Guide Them Through the Discomfort – Encourage them to stay with the unfamiliar CI combination long enough to notice new possibilities.
- Model the Shift Yourself – Demonstrate alternate construction in your own communication.
Phase 4 – Co-construction of New Thinking Style (Real-time Modelling)
Purpose: Build and test a deliberately chosen thinking style in session.
- Collaboratively Assemble a New CI Pattern – Combine 2–3 CIs for greater Dynamic Intelligence.
- Run the Scenario Again – Compare outcomes against the original construction.
- Highlight Awareness Gains – Show what changed and why it matters developmentally.
Phase 5 – Future Integration (Next Level Coaching)
Purpose: Turn the in-session shift into lasting developmental momentum.
- Link to AQ Growth – Position the shift on the AQ scale.
- Set a Live-World Application Task – Choose a real-life situation for deliberate CI use.
- Agree a Reflection Practice – Encourage tracking Intention–Awareness–Choice–Response moments.
