CDT: Metacognition for Adults

CDT is the deliberate evolution of metacognition

“Most people believe they’re thinking… but they’re really just remembering.” – Dr Darren Stevens

There is a video coming soon to YouTube that introduces how CDT isn’t just about ‘thinking about thinking’. It’s about constructing *how* you think — in real time. Not backward-looking reflection, but forward-facing awareness and choice.
Adults don’t need more knowledge.
They need more awareness of how they apply what they know. Your very own Epistemic Stance (Laske, 2008 - I can't claim that one)

Traditional Metacognition vs CDT

  • Traditional: Reflective (after the fact)
  • CDT: Real-time metacognitive construction
  • Traditional: Generalised strategies
  • CDT: Specific Cognitive Intention use
  • Traditional: Passive review
  • CDT: Dynamic, deliberate reconstruction

Where traditional metacognition looks backward, CDT looks inward and forward. It’s not just about realising what you did. It’s about seeing what you’re doing now, and HOW you are doing it — and deliberately choosing to change it.

The Role of AQ

Your Awareness Quotient (AQ) reflects your ability to construct your thinking in the moment. At AQ4 you might reflect afterwards. At AQ8 or AQ9, you notice and shift your patterns mid-sentence. It’s fluid, it’s emergent, and it’s completely learnable.

Your Awareness Quotient, or AQ, tells us how consciously you construct your reality. It measures how likely you are to reflect in the moment and adapt — not just review afterwards. At higher AQ levels, you don’t just think — you think about how you’re thinking. And you shift it.

The Problem with Adult Thinking

Over time, those patterns become embedded.
We don’t think — we run programs.
We repeat what worked once. We default to familiar Cognitive Intentions.
And we confuse repetition for wisdom.

CDT is a metacognitive system that makes those thought patterns visible.
We identify the Cognitive Intentions — the mental shortcuts — that drive your behaviour.
And we bring them into Awareness.
So you can choose differently.
In real time.

Dynamic Intelligence

At the heart of CDT are the 50 Cognitive Intentions. Think of them as the alphabet of your internal language.
Each one is a heuristic — a shortcut — that helps or hinders your Awareness. By understanding your Thinking Style, we help you rewrite your internal script.

CDT calls this real-time awareness and adaptation Dynamic Intelligence. It’s the capacity to navigate from Intention to Response by making each step a conscious construction. Not default. Not autopilot. But deliberate living. It’s your ability to construct yourself in the moment — to notice, reflect, and recalibrate.
So yes — CDT is metacognition. But it’s metacognition for adults who are ready to grow.
Not reflect on who they were…
But deliberately decide who they’re becoming.
In CDT, this is what maturity truly means.
Not age.
Not experience.
But Awareness, used deliberately.

If you're ready to construct your self, context, and behaviour on purpose — not by habit —
